Hi guys! I have these amazing giveaways for you, sponsored by Microsoft. Before I go to the prizes, I would like to mention that Microsoft is having a web event called Make Web, Not War ’09 in Toronto on Jun 10th (full day), and Vancouver on Jun 2nd (half day). Visit their site for details and registration. Write a comment about the event before Jun 12, in this post, for a chance to win: Microsoft Expression Studio, Gears of War 2 (Xbox game), or 250GB LaCie External Drive.

How to win a prize?

  • Post your comment about the event in this post.
  • One entry per person. Duplicate comments will be voided and deleted.
  • Winners will be contacted by email.

Comment entries will be accepted until June 12, 2009. Then three winning numbers will be generated randomly from the comment list. First number will get the first prize, second number will get the second prize, and third number will get the third prize.

May 29, 2009 at 7:24 pm

I’d love to make this event. I’ll be up in Vancouver this summer…but not that weekend.

May 29, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Sounds like a great place to be – alas i wont be in the area on those days.
Maybe you can let us know here how it went afterwards?
Thanks – J

May 29, 2009 at 7:34 pm

I’m sorry that I can’t attend the events this year. They look interesting.

May 29, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Daniel McL
May 29, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Sounds interesting, unfortunately I’m on the wrong side of the pond. I’ll just have to settle for a prize instead. ;)

May 29, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Its a shame that most of the interesting events are in the US. Thanks for the chance to give your visitors some candy :)

May 29, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Really? It’s good, Thanks

Chris Wilson
May 29, 2009 at 8:01 pm

May 29, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I love free stuff!

May 29, 2009 at 8:36 pm

To be honest, a lot of people think that the conference is Microsoft so they will not go, but Microsoft really has a lot of innovative people there. I really wanted to go…

May 29, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Great giveaway, anyway, I didn’t like that the webpage for the event was on flash… I think that’s not a difficult design to reproduce with html+css+jquery

Chris Praley
May 29, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I really want to go! I love conventions like these, even if it is Microsoft there. There’s usually a lot of innovative people there.

May 29, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Interesting, though I’m not really clear what Make Web, Not War ‘09 is covering.

May 29, 2009 at 9:03 pm

It’s an interesting initiative, “Make Web, Not War”, and they say it’s 2009 edition. Does any of you heard anything about previous edition(s)?

…oh, and good luck to everyone with the give-aways ;)

May 29, 2009 at 9:10 pm

I’d be interested in learning more about the event. Doesn’t seem clear what exactly will happen there, but I seem to fit the criteria of someone that should attend.

May 29, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Will you be going to and reporting from this event? “Thank you” to Microsoft for doing the give-aways!

Juan Ignacio Lacueva
May 29, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Nice name for an event!

May 29, 2009 at 9:23 pm

To answer a person below me, this the first of these conferences. Seems moderately interesting…I wonder why they do a lot of these events in Canada. Is it cheaper?

May 29, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Looks like a nice event to attend!

May 29, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Looks like a good idea… wish I knew more of what it covered and that my whole job was in this area… never have enough time to learn all of these new ideas.

May 29, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Cost is very appealing “Donate what you want” and recommended donation only $10. So everyone will be able to attend.

Ron Green
May 29, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Tobad, it would’ve been great here with yllekoftor and meatballs.

May 30, 2009 at 3:43 am

Well, if I won the other two ones I’d hold a design contest with them as prices :D

I’ve asked microsoft once whether they’d like to sponsor me personally but they answered negatively, because my blog (http://asmodiel.de) is too small… :(

May 30, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Angie, Microsoft Canada
May 30, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Hi everyone – it’s great hearing all the positive comments about the event. My name is Angie and I am one of the lead organizers of ‘Make Web, Not War’ 09. It is one of the first times we’ve done something like this from Microsoft for the Web Community & really looking forward to seeing you all there. I have noticed some confusion about what the event is really about so here are a few things in summary, that will be of benefit to you:

o Hear from other Web Partners who build on Open Source & Microsoft technologies
o Network with fellow members of the Web Community
o Learn about the latest Microsoft technologies & how they work with Open Source
o Get technical training of Web Tools to build your Web Development portfolio
o Win prizes in the Web Partner Contest & get your Web Warrior DVD of all the latest Microsoft Web Resources

If you have any questions or feedback about the event, feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] or follow me on twitter @angielim. If you are looking for more information feel free to join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=118669152176&ref=ts or our Twitter feed at @WebNotWar.

I will be sure to post the first video of the event as soon as it is live to share with you all. :) Look forward to hearing from you all or seeing you at the Toronto & Vancouver events.

May 30, 2009 at 7:39 pm

LOVE the site design. Great event.

May 30, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Toronto is a bit far for my amateur web skills. Those who can go, enjoy it for me.

May 30, 2009 at 8:44 pm

This is open across the globe? :D
If soo..

May 30, 2009 at 10:30 pm

i wonder what that event is going to be about?

Cindy Wilson
May 30, 2009 at 11:27 pm

I was surprised that there was so little info offered for what looks to be an outstanding event. Will continue to watch for updates to their site. Site design is interesting but it might have been fun to create the look that the video is going for – 60’s Make Love not War look.

May 31, 2009 at 1:34 am

Wow thats great !

May 31, 2009 at 5:05 am

Ya looks like a great event for all web developers out there. Also its a gud news that microsoft has now started providing greater support for php web applications through their tools and server. Hope this will help tame the ulimited possibilities of the PHP language using simpler tools and GUI’s.
But since i’m not a canadian i’ll miss this event a lot.

Jun 1, 2009 at 1:32 am

The event could be managed all over the world. Maybe next one will happen in my home town :)

Jun 1, 2009 at 1:51 am

Sounds cool.

Marius van Belkum
Jun 1, 2009 at 2:07 am

Sounds cool?

Pick me!

Jun 1, 2009 at 2:12 am

I’d love to visit Canada one day :)

Jun 1, 2009 at 2:25 am

When’s the Europe meeting? :)

Jun 1, 2009 at 2:27 am

I wish Microsoft would do more events like these in Korea as well :(

Jun 1, 2009 at 2:40 am

I’m in!

Well, title “Make Web, Not War ‘09” I understand as a good sign from Microsoft, believe or not but I see IE6 motives here. I believe it’s all about the piece.

Jun 1, 2009 at 2:52 am

Sounds Sweet, I hope I win!

Jun 1, 2009 at 3:22 am

If microsoft want to stop a war they should discontinue IE and save us all from bad hacks. x

Jun 1, 2009 at 3:24 am

Will the Internet explorer developers be at the show for us all to throw rotten fruit at?

Jun 1, 2009 at 3:24 am

If someone could pay my air fair I’d be there. Love to go back to Canada one day.

Jun 1, 2009 at 3:40 am

Shame I live in Scotland, a little too far to travel for the conference. I did once see Chris Wilson speak though and he was actually very good.

Shame IE is still naff!

Jun 1, 2009 at 4:57 am

We dont’ need IE hacks :-P

It’s beatiful that everyone has chance to win ;-)

Jun 1, 2009 at 5:08 am

Make love not IE

Jun 1, 2009 at 5:30 am

release all those things form the video of the future!

Jun 1, 2009 at 6:17 am

Wew! I guess Microsoft should do this more often :) Thanks for the freebies :) I’m looking forward any of the items mentioned :p

Jun 1, 2009 at 6:23 am

Superb! I wish I could go to this event. =/

Jun 1, 2009 at 6:46 am

Could always use some more external storage :)

Jun 1, 2009 at 7:10 am

It’s good Microsoft tries to organise this sort of things to get closer to their most hated people, the webdevs/designers who have to code for the IE’s :(

I just hope they’ll announce some drastic change there :)

Thanks for the sponsor though, yay for microsoft! (I actually said it :P )

Elizabeth K. Barone
Jun 1, 2009 at 9:16 am

Why are all the awesome cons in Canada? Maybe I need to organize a road trip! Tech con envy aside, I am going to a horror con this month to meet Bruce Campbell and Robert Englund, so I guess that makes up for it. (:

Enjoy if you are going!

Cindy Roetz
Jun 1, 2009 at 9:37 am

Wish South Africa was more proactive when it comes to things like this, Its easy to allow the world to do things for you. I think we def need more web awareness down here

Jun 1, 2009 at 9:59 am

Canada is nice, but faaar away from me :-( …next stop: Spain please!
However, a good opportunity to say how nice and helpful this web site is. Keep up the good work!

Jun 1, 2009 at 11:00 am

For sure going to this event!

Raimi B
Jun 1, 2009 at 11:19 am

Jun 1, 2009 at 11:47 am

Jun 1, 2009 at 11:49 am

I would even take other things than the listed prizes! :)

Olivia Krowicka
Jun 1, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Jun 1, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Mads Hensel
Jun 1, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Canada, maby a bit longe way for some one who lives in Denmark!! But I’m shure you’ll have a great review on you wall!

Jun 1, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Hopefully M’soft will host a shindig a bit closer to home! I have been wondering about expression studio… I wondered if it was all that it’s cracked up to be.

Jun 1, 2009 at 4:15 pm

I’d love to take part in this event, but I’m afraid, I won’t get from Germany to Vancouver or Toronto.
But I though would like to get this OfficePack…

Jun 1, 2009 at 5:41 pm

I would love to go, but I am nowhere near that area this summer! Such a pity! =(

Robyn Lynn
Jun 1, 2009 at 6:58 pm

I’m a total newbie, but as it happens, I am in Vancouver and just heard about this…day before, so maybe I can still get in and learn from some great designers! Thanks for the heads up!

Jun 1, 2009 at 7:08 pm

When will this happen in L.A…..

Brandon Dove
Jun 1, 2009 at 7:31 pm

it would be interesting to see what Microsoft’s view of what “making the web” is. IE is notoriously the worst browser to code for.

Michael Wilson
Jun 1, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Hahaha, this should be interesting – I don’t have anything against Microsoft, they just.. shouldn’t be doing browsers anymore. I hope silverlight comes out with some sick tech though.

Jun 1, 2009 at 9:23 pm

The event seems interesting, and is even close by to me. Love the design of their website with the nerdy looking kid on it.

Jun 1, 2009 at 10:37 pm

hope one of your upcoming episodes will held on Asia

Jeremy Ham
Jun 2, 2009 at 12:09 am

Jun 2, 2009 at 1:32 pm

What fun. Sounds like a really cool event. Sweet prizes. :)

Jun 2, 2009 at 2:54 pm

While it seems interesting, there’s no way I could make it clear across the US to Canada to attend. Any chance for some coverage of the event for the rest of us?

Katie Oakes
Jun 2, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Hopefully this event will be full of good information.

Jun 2, 2009 at 5:07 pm

I would love to attend this event. I am very interested in getting more involved in website design. It is too bad that I can get away from work long enough to go. Not sure how I feel about using the Star Wars theme on the announcement though.

Marcelo Novaes
Jun 2, 2009 at 10:19 pm

They really should take the guys who designed the event’s site and put him to work on their “Bing” search engine…
Nice event, nonetheless. Too bad I’m currently kind of far from there!

Jun 3, 2009 at 2:49 am

I want some stuff!

Love the blog, it would be great if you could post more often.

Jun 3, 2009 at 11:38 am

Well, in the office we have tasted the expresion web since the first version and i don’t know if is so usefull, Adobe is a really monster too defeat. I would like to know how microsoft will teach or convince to use expresion blend, design, etc. The best software that the suite have is Expression web, it´s really great! I used for construct the html/css of http://www.metrabajo.com. It’s like a dreamweaver CS3 but can read better microsoft lenguage and it have a very usefull thing that is that you can see the Styles aparience in the box of CSS, it´s really nice. But I cannot get used with Expression Blend. Expression Design is very very simple. The othes soft i have never tested.

Alicia Teater
Jun 3, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Love the main page on the event website! The spin on Star Wars was great! Just getting started creating a website for work so it was a fun inspiration since we are all Star Wars “lovers.”

Jun 3, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Im wondernig what Microsoft brings to the web for new stuff. They are way behind in the browser market as they stood still the last couple of years in the eyes for new techniques.
Although IE8 comes close they better make a kill update for IE6 users so that they will update to a newer version what makes life easier for developers around the world!

Hope I win the studio software ;-)

Jun 3, 2009 at 3:29 pm

The nerdiness of the website is fantastic! I’d be so in to hang out with anybody who is gonna be able to make it!

Jun 3, 2009 at 3:40 pm

I’m interested in what Morten Rand-Hendriksen will have to say!

I hope they put some clips from the conference up online!

Jun 3, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Seems interesting. The site throws me as all the different styles… but maybe that’s the point. And since when does Microsoft care about everything being the same… haha ….THANKS for the contest!

Jun 3, 2009 at 6:33 pm

Wow… great chance!.. I hope I win the Expression Studio

Jun 3, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Nice to see microsoft pushing for web standards!
If IE gets up to date on cutting edge CSS standards we could see some pretty cool web sites pop up!

Jun 9, 2009 at 11:01 am

These Microsoft events are usually quite informative. I’ve never been disappointed by one.

Jun 10, 2009 at 2:31 am

mmm… pretty far from Italy. why they use flash instead of silverlight on the site?

Jun 10, 2009 at 5:51 am

Microsoft Rocks !!!
I would love to attend this event but i cant afford to travel that far.

Jun 10, 2009 at 11:05 am

I fell in love with web design about 6 months ago because of w.d.w. and now I’m making a living of it. I’d love to be able to share my experience like you do one day, it’s inspiring.
June 10th, heading to Toronto. Yeah!

Rafael Nascimento Sampaio
Jun 10, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Interesting, but in toronto for example only have capacity for 200 people, I think they don’t plan it to be a really international event, otherwise some itens from agenda look very attractive like the ftw and the audience interaction for example, I like games so my vote for game loung should not matter hehe.

Jun 10, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Sounds interesting, glad to see they’re trying to embrace web standards.

Allahverdi Suleymanov

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I love the prizes. =)

Hi All,
I am from the UK and are visting family and friends in Canada for a few weeks, anyways I went to ”Make Web Not War” event, it was my first Microsoft event and pretty happy I did. Building Interoperadle Web Apps with PHP (this presentation by Yann Larivee speaks about what makes PHP one the the most dominant technologies for web development) it was intresting and PHP rocks!!! I hope next time they give a bag to put the goodies in…oh and those lovely prizes… :) Derek

Ethan Hackett
Jun 12, 2009 at 9:03 am

I totally understand Microsoft’s desire to make web not war, but most of my daily battles are because of IE…. so….. that statement kind of gets lost with the reality that it’s mostly their fault.

Jun 12, 2009 at 11:10 am

Awesome event! I’m feeling lucky!

Juan Manuel
Jun 12, 2009 at 10:58 pm
