Last December, I posted a list of the best designs in 2007. Now, it is time for — Best of CSS Design 2008 (a new list of 50 websites hand-picked from Best Web Gallery). This year, more designers are using the large background technique and utilizing Javascript frameworks (such as jQuery and MooTools) to enchance the user experience. I also came across a few designs that mixed Flash with CSS; perhaps a new trend we should look for in 2009?

Let It Bleed

Big bold visual images make this website stand out from the crowd.

screenshot

Vermont Coffee Works

Good use of Flash mixed with CSS.

screenshot

Digital Mash

screenshot

Good

Good visual and content-focused design.

screenshot

Wilson Miner

screenshot

DrupalCon, DC

screenshot

Future of Web Apps – Miami 2009

An excellent mixture of big font and grungy effects.

screenshot

Housing Works

Nice use of large background on the homepage. Large background web design is very hot lately.

screenshot

Future of Web Design – NYC 2008

Another nice example of large background design.

screenshot

Tennessee – Fall

I have to admit, Tennessee’s sites are one of the best series — Fall, Spring, Summer, and Winter.

Branded07

screenshot

Cappuccino

A very origanized site with great usability.

screenshot

LightCMS

LightCMS incorporated some pencil/sketchy effects, yet maintained its corporate feel.

screenshot

The First Twenty

Nicely designed one-page site.

screenshot

YouLove.Us

Great implementation of CSS and Javascript (jQuery).

screenshot

Luke Larsen

The aquarium themed portfolio of Luke Larsen demonstrates great use of jQuery’s Scrollto plugin.

screenshot

Design Disease

Wavy and rounded shapes make this site look fun and interesting.

screenshot

Adaptd

Although the design style reminds me of ISO50 (Scott Hansen), but it is worth to mention.

screenshot

Jason Santa Maria

screenshot

Electricurrent

Notice how Electricurrent used the background image technique to display the portfolio images?

screenshot

Training by Collective Idea

screenshot

MacAllan Ridge

Good visual design, easy navigation — two thumbs up.

screenshot

Pikaboo

A cool design that combined CSS, Javascript, and Flash technology.

screenshot

Mochi Ads

screenshot

Fling Media

screenshot

eWedding

screenshot

Viget

Viget did a great job on branding their image by maintaining the consistency throughout their series of blogs — Inspire, Advance, Engage, and Extend.

screenshot

August

An awesome design that used Flash scalable image as the background (resize your browser to see the scalable background).

screenshot

Car Freaks

This blog frequently change their homepage background photo to provide refreshing feel.

screenshot

Go To China

Here is a perfect example that uses high resolution photos for website’s background. Notice the background image is scalable based on your browser size (done by Javascript CSS).

screenshot

Jesus Christ

screenshot

Billy Hughes

screenshot

Free People

FreePeople is my all time favorite design (love the collage style).

screenshot

Mouse to Minx

Retro and sexy.

screenshot

Dara’s Garden

screenshot

Design Sponge

The scrapbook design style is a perfect match for the site’s content.

screenshot

Ma.tt

screenshot

The Lippincott

screenshot

Hot Meteor

Love the hot retro font!

screenshot

Fortyseven Media

screenshot

The Old State

It is rare to find such a beautiful black and white theme.

The scaleable hi-res background for GO TO CHINA is simply done with CSS. No Javascript. Just try it with “noScript” switched on. :)

So PAINFULLY predictable. I’m very tired of the web 2.0 look, and the stupid ultra clean motif that has taken over. Even the fake grunge look, and “Oops look what fell out of my doodle book and onto my website look” like seen here. GAG ME MAN! Lastly, I’m tired of people telling me what looks good, and the “rules” of good design. Rules? Shoot!

The Volll site is redirecting to a crapwar / spyware site. You’ll find yourself forcing quitting your browser because multiple prompts will warn you about your PC being infected. I just discovered that while using LittleSnapper. See screenshots on Flickr – http://www.flickr.com/photos/0401/3120097141/

That link should be checked or removed. I feel sorry for anyone who might be using Windows and opens that site.

I’m with you with these sites, they offer a nice range of graphic and layout freedom. We’re getting closer to real design these days – now if we could only fix that nasty typography issue.

BTW I went and checked out that Scott Hansen guy’s stuff, and talk about being derivative – I’d say he’s more guilty of that than Adaptd is.

We are deeply sorry about that malware/spyware thing which resulted our link removal, it seems our site has been infected/hacked/whatever by someone/something (im just a designer – i dont know how this stuff works). But it’s all cool now, and I hope we’ll get our link back :)

I just have to say that I love sites like dara’s garden, mouse to minx and design sponge, but some of the more chunky (some would call them clean and graphic) sites I can admire, but they really don’t appeal to the girls, which I suspect they are not meant to.
I do find some of the sites a bit “tricky” or trying too hard to use funky tools rather than communicate, but overall a great collection to sum up the design of the year.

between these best-of posts and your WP tutorials, you’re my new favorite resource — thanks for bringing us some real value.

any way you can point me to the technique ringvemedia (go to china) used for their scalable background? i’m having trouble pinning it down.

thanks again.

I agree about a lot of these sites, but it would be nice to have some reasons why each design is considered “the best”. Visit China uses a giant image in a table, which has little to nothing to do with CSS. Setting its height/width to 100% isn’t clever at all. I agree that the rules can be broken, but going backwards in standards is not the way to do it.

Thaks for including AdaptD in your list. As for ISO50 i am familiar with his work and i must say other that both being vintage i don’t see much in common.

I love the Viget sites and am amazed of how they produced 4 different, inspired and original designs for the blogs.

Would you say there’s anything NEW here? Did anything new happen in 2008? I feel like these are all nice designs based on websites I’ve seen before 2008….

The Tennessee websites are amazing because their content is amazing… And the Jason Santa Maria website is gorgeous like print design is… but I don’t see anything new this year…. What do you think?

What would a list be if it didn’t have JC on it? (doomed no doubt!)… Lovely collection of CSS greats.

2008 was about freeing designers up to create what previously would have been too costly, or just plain madness (IMO), and for that we took a nice big step forward with design moving on and on.

But I’d like to see some breakthrough in other areas this year, maybe we all look beyond the aesthetic and more deeply in to the functionality. It seems like last year we all made minor breakthroughs on the coding front, making things slicker and better optimised. It seemed more about building on what we already had really!

This year we have to make more breakthroughs. CSS is a well rounded tool now and JQuery the minimum requirement, what next? Answers or predictions on a postcard to…

Nice list, but it’s too bad the DesignSponge site uses a table layout to get things to line up. I thought the point was to highlight good use of CSS for layout and not some antiquated table/css hybrid.

I know, I know, there are “zillions” of good sites, but I want to recommend Mail Chimp (www.mailchimp.com) yesterday and I really liked the desing. I think is what GOOD DESIGN means, more than “pretty” it has to be useful and friendly, don’t you think?

That’s why I really liked MailChimp site…
