By now, I think most of you should know that WordPress can do more than just a blog platform. With WordPress, plus some plugins, you can build almost any type of websites. To show you what I mean, I have collected 30 websites that use WordPress for different purposes — from general websites to portfolios, ecommerce and corporate sites. Hope this post will open up more ideas for you to use WordPress.

I believe the word is “atypical.” :)

Geoffrey Hale

Haha, I thought the same thing. Then I figured “untypical” is an atypical way of saying atypical. ;)

Actually, “atypical” and “untypical” are both correct and mean the same thing (looked it up in the dictionary). I was taught to use “atypical”, so “untypical” sounds awkward to me. However, they are both acceptable, in American English, anyway.

but, I guess that’s just hard-coded into the header via a meta tag, just makes you wonder why they would do that if they’re using ee? Doesn’t seem like it would be an oversight.

I think the most atypical/untypical use of WordPress is an e-Commerce site. That is what etsblished the system as being the best option out there for me personally.

Thanks for including 45royale in your list, we’re honored!

@Josh: The post that you linked to is an older post, we’ve since moved back to WordPress. We used Expression Engine for the previous build and found that it was too heavy for what we were trying to accomplish. We’re back on the WordPress bus and have been using it with a lot of our clients as a CMS for a couple years now.

Although some of them are a little bit older now, I’ve written a few articles that might help you achieve some of the functionality we’ve implemented with the latest build. Hopefully it helps!

Great group of sites – thank you for (once again) finding great inspiration for us all. It’s always exciting to see what people are doing with WordPress. Personally, I love building sites with WordPress.I started building my own themes after reading a tutorial on this site (thank you Web Designer Wall!). I’m finding that one of the most important things to do when learning is to stop thinking of WordPress as a ‘blog’ — it’s so much more!

Can’t wait to see what you find for us next time. This is another great post – thank you!

staypuftman
May 21, 2009 at 11:33 pm

Most of these sites still seem primarily content driven with a few ecommerce builds in there (your icondock is most impressive as showcasing the platform).

Most of these sites are beautiful and some extend wordpress but its hard for me to sell a client on morphing a blogging platform into an ecommerce suite in the face of something built for that purpose like magneto, etc.

For 3.0, wordpress needs to lower the barrier for entry into the CMS side of its platform. With wordpress’ superior UI, it could overtake drupal in the small-mid CMS category with the right tweaks. As it stands now, its a lot of ‘it-could-bes’ for your average developer. 3.0 should be interesting regardless…

This is the most untypical wordpress site I’ve ever seen. It has over three hundred underwater and aerial 360 degree spherical
panoramas taken in the Florida Keys. I’ve never seen wordpress used
for a website like this before. The A-list just named it “best of the web”. I
thought that you would like to see it. http://www.360FloridaKeys.com

99.9% of these wordpress sites are based off pre-made templates. Only some of them are coded from scratch. Plus most of their doctypes are HTML transitional meaning 99.9% of them render horribly in an iphone or android device. (This means the theme designers mass produced the theme).

If you’re going to make a list about unconventional wordpress themes include themes which subvert the whole wordpress engine, like extjswordpress.net for example.
