People mostly use either serif or sans-serif fonts and often miss out the handwritten fonts. They are as important as the main font classifications. I particularly like to use handwritten fonts to highlight significant items in screen captures. They add the personal touch in my design and also provide great typographic contrast. However, not all handwritten fonts are legible. I’ve put together a huge list of free handwritten and script fonts that work well.

Nice list, but be VERY careful and check the licensing agreements when using any ‘free’ fonts – most of them are ‘free for personal use’, meaning no commercial applications (e.g. using them for anything you’ll make a profit on – magazines, client websites, t-shirts, posters, flyers etc.) and no @font-face (or other web embedding).

For example: Hand of Sean. I know the author, and a donation is required for any commercial use, and (currently) @font-face is not part of that agreement.

Just a heads-up!

Great list! I really like Mural. And thanks to Mike for the advice regarding licensing agreements. It’s tru3, you do need to read them for restrictions.

I was wondering what the support is in the print community? I’ve always refrained from using them in print jobs because I was unsure of whether the printer would support them. It’s probably a silly question I know.

Hey, Nick. Good collection. Just wanted to point out that “Freestyle Script” is not free. It belongs to Martin Wait: http://www.martinwait.co.uk/

It shouldn’t be offered for free download on that website, as far as I understand. It’s actually the font I use for my logo, and I had talked to Martin about using it because it came with software that I had purchased, so I was able to use it commercially.

Allan
Jun 13, 2010 at 7:24 am

Several of the fonts should not be offered for free. They are from type designers who earn their living by licensing the designs. Among them are Bradley Hand, Freestyle Script and One Stroke Script. If you use them, you are basically stealing from type designers.

Danny
Jun 13, 2010 at 1:06 pm

@ Allan & Louis
If I take a free of rights font and slightly change the design of just a few letters and then rename the font to a name of my choice, can I claim it to be MY font? Can I sell it for profits? Would it be legal? So many questions…
@ Louis
I suggest you ask Martin Wait: Did you start from scratch when you designed the Freestyle Font?

Arif
Jun 13, 2010 at 1:17 pm

If we can get all the fonts in a single zip document that would be great, but thanks to upload these fonts for free :)

It relies heavily on touch because the pages I have a user acting on, are usually a collection of child records. Caching is a big help in this respect. Thanks

Something one should think about, how ever something you don’t see much of in this day and age on a internet site. Have times are changing are people starting to take a deeper look into handwritten script. Is it something that we will now see on web sites, if that been the case maybe it’s about time.

great resource! I like to use handwritten fonts on some of my poster designs. It’s a nice way to break up and add to traditional fonts.

The same font characteristics that make so many of these good for web work, also make them good candidates for video titling. This is a real treasure, Nick. Thanks so much for pulling them together and presenting them so nicely.

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? My website has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any techniques to help prevent content from being ripped off? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Some lovely fonts here. Not too fond on the really handwritten ones, but there are some nice ones which show a bit more curve than standard fonts.

Hi! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from an established
blog. Is it very difficult to set up your own blog?
I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking
about creating my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thanks
